Temples
Thirucherai Sivan Temple, also known as Saraparameswarar Temple, is a revered temple with a rich history. The temple's legend says that Sage Markandeya installed a Linga for his own soul satisfaction and worshipped Lord Rina Vimochana Lingeswarar, who is believed to spare people from poverty and debt. Devotees offer prayers on 11 Mondays and participate in the abishek ceremony on the 11th Monday to realize their prayers. The temple is home to a Swayambumurthy and a holy tree called Mavilangai. The rays of the sun fall directly on the presiding deity and the feet of the Mother on 13, 14 and 15th of Masi month.
Thirucherai Sivan Temple is renowned for its greatness, with Lord Saraparameswara being praised in the name of Chenneri Appar. It's the only temple where three Durgas - Shiva Durga, Vaishnavi Durga, and Vishnu Durga - grace devotees from one shrine. Lamp worship is followed in this shrine during Rahukalam time, and Bhairava graces from His shrine after worshipping the Navagrahas and Sri Nataraja. The temple is also known for its Sun worship, which is performed ardently during the whole Masi month.
Devotees offer abishek and vastras to the Lord on realizing their prayers, and the affluent ones do poor feeding (Annadhanam) and contribute to the temple's maintenance and renovation. The temple is an excellent place to seek the grace of the Lord for freedom from debt burdens and cure from illness. The temple was built by the famous Chola King Kulothunga Chozhan and is noted for its fertility in the Thevaram hymns.
